1878 Tie-Back Underskirt Pattern

Perfect pattern for Natural Form Era petticoats! 1877-1882

This skirt is drafted based on a tailoring method actually used in the 1870's. The skirt is slim in front and is tied on the inside in back to wrap around the body leaving the center back fullness free. It has the traditional 5 gores and a full back width. The closure is in the left side-back seam. An optional 12" ruffle can be added to the hem of the skirt.

Sizes included:
Waist: 20" to 46"
Hip: 30" to 56"

Yardage requirements (45" or 60" wide, without nap):
Skirt: 3 3/4 yards
Skirt with ruffle: 5 3/4 yards
If using napped fabric allow up to 1 1/2 yards extra.

Notions:

Hook and eye closures; 2 yards tie strings (may use ribbon, string, tapes, etc.)

Even though this is technically a skirt pattern, it works wondrously well for petticoats too to wear under the skirt. Simply cut the same panels and make up as a plain, top petticoat. You may need to either cut your skirt a half size larger or take smaller seam allowances in the seams so the skirt lays nice and not tight over the petticoat made in this same pattern.
